An ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ Fan Favorite Returns in the Season 17 Trailer

Charlie Kelly’s most formidable intellectual adversary is finally coming back to the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia universe. Will the two esteemed men of the law finally have that duel?

On July 9th, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia will return with its 17th season that’s shaping up to be every bit as high-budget and chaotic as we could hope from the enduring sitcom nearly two decades into its historic run. In that time, countless hilarious side characters have come and gone (some in a body bag, others in the toilet), and considering how thoughtlessly destructive the Gang has been toward the unfortunate bystanders of their hijinks, it’s a miracle that anyone has survived more than a single visit to Paddy’s Pub.

Now, one of the most antagonized unnamed characters in Always Sunny history will make his grand return to the series, six seasons after Royal McPoyle took his eye out. In one brief scene from the official It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 17 trailer that FX released earlier today, we can see The Lawyer, eye patch and all, eating something in his office while Frank laughs maniacally.

What will these meshuggeneh goyim do to him this time?

The lawyer, played by It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia star and creator Rob McElhenney's long-time co-star Brian Unger, first appeared in the series during the Season Three episode “Dennis and Dees Mom Is Dead,” in which he tried desperately to explain to Dennis, Dee and Frank what the executor of a will can and cannot do — for instance, the deceaseds lawyer is unable to speak to the dead.

Over the course of the next eight seasons, The Lawyer would grow closer and closer to The Gang, usually unintentionally, as he played the legal foil in many of their schemes while his own life began to fall apart. The Lawyer has many of the Gangs victims in legal actions against them, but in his most recent appearance in the Season 11 episode “McPoyle vs. Ponderosa: The Trial of the Century,” he, himself, fell victim to the chaos that follows the Gangs every move.

Finally, after a six-season absence, Unger and The Lawyer are set to make their sixth appearance on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, at which point well be unable to pretend that the Lawyer is a casualty of the Gangs antics considering how willingly he now engages with his mortal enemies. No more kvetching from this guy.
